Indonesia is a country that holds a small island of Bali-rich in traditions, history, natural beauty, as well as people. It is a nine-week program that consists of oceanography, marine biology, and geography courses in a place flourishing with biodiverse landscapes; remote villages in the mountains, cultural centers, coastlines, and reefs will be respectfully explored on this trip. Many learning opportunities are present through this program through cultural and academic events such as taking a Balinese cooking class, and snorkeling, as most of the curriculum is hands-on with fieldwork and research. I have chosen this program because I am a water woman at heart, I love to learn about other cultures, I want to expand my understanding of the ocean below us, and I want to establish connections with people.
I am a competitive surfer, water polo player, lifeguard, and ocean enthusiast. Being a surfer there is a responsibility to take care of your home and the water that breathes so much life back into your veins. To learn and be educated about the environment that prospers and creates so much joy for all is important. I have a passion for caring and learning about my home I call the ocean, and cannot wait to expand my knowledge on this vast topic through the marine biology course offered on this trip and local knowledge. I would like to continue my studies researching marine biology, as a possible career, and this trip will delve into a trial run of what I envision my future life to be. I look forward to learning about an ocean that is not my own, and to explore into this unknown of traveling. I have not experienced a place so different from what I am comfortable in, and am ready with open arms to immerse myself. This trip can cultivate an academic playground for me with the opportunity to be submerged in the ocean which is where I feel truly at home.
