My Travel Story

My name is Rosemary Carroll, and I'm a mathematics major.

I'm raising funds to go on a Short-Term Faculty-Led Study Abroad class: The History of Science and Technology in Europe. It's a two-week tour of educational sites, combined with pre-departure study of how the history of science has affected the political and social status of the world today. This is a course that is vital to my education. I will become a professor after attending graduate school, and understanding the world outside of the United States is critical if I am to respect my international colleagues.

I need to know the history of my field: which scientists were ignored by their peers and popular representations of history, and why they were ignored; whether it be from bigotry or simply lack of thought, so that I do not make the same mistakes and ignore what progress has been made to the present day. Knowing this history will help me become a better educator and student leader because I will know what has influenced scientific discoveries and be able to explain the progression of science to students, as well as who discovered key concepts and why.

When I'm a professor, I will know much more about what defines a scientific discovery and what it takes for a discovery to be accepted by the scientific community. I will be able to encourage students and point them specifically to representative historical figures that will inspire them. I will be able to educate them beyond the book both inside and outside of the classroom. After seeing the world outside of the US, I will be able to understand other cultures and create a stronger bond with students from all walks of life.

  • 11% And 87 Days Left! Passport Shenanigans!

I've emailed most of the people I can email, so soon I'm moving onto printing out the URL for this and giving it to people. Later this week or next week, I'm going to be going to the Post Office to get what I need to get my passport! I hope I can get it smoothly and that I can work out a better payment plan. Right now, if I keep getting donations, I should be able to make my payments, but it doesn't look like my part-time job is depositing my checks correctly, or FundMyTravel isn't depositing the money correctly, so right now it's all a bit up in the air. But I'm over 10% funded! And that's something to celebrate.
  • 2% And 103 Days Left!

I found a photo from my university's page for my campaign photo, and I'm working pretty hard to get my campaign out there. It's hard to humanize a donation campaign, though- part of me keeps freezing up and resorting to 'professional development!' instead of saying that this is one of the only chances I'll likely get to travel outside of the Midwest, or that by having an 'abroad experience', I'll have an easier time of getting into a graduate school, of networking with scientists that aren't in the US... Of just getting out of the US and learning something about the world! I don't know anything about the outside world that hasn't come from American sources. There's so much about physics and mathematics that I bet I don't know because it's not important to American history. I think this trip will help me with that.
