My Travel Story

by: Emily Courchaine Start Date: Mar 5, 2023 - End Date: Jul 1, 2023
I am an 18-year-old from Colorado and passionate about nature conservation which I plan to pursue as a career. I am traveling to the Belize Barrier Reef for three weeks on a volunteer mission with IVHQ, where I will help protect endangered marine life, gain experience in marine conservation, and become further educated on the effects of climate change. I will also learn how to control the invasive Lionfish that destroy the reef and will work to remove trash and plastic from the land and ocean. This volunteer mission is an extraordinary opportunity to begin my education and to be able to positively impact a conservation project I am most passinonate about.

Coral reefs around the world are dying. They are in critical danger from human activities including pollution, global warming, overfishing, and other destructive practices. These act as immense stressors, which lead to widescale coral bleaching and devastating impacts on the inhabitants of the reefs.

If you want to learn more about the importance of our coral reefs, you can read on the National Ocean Service website linked below!

Thank you for helping to send me on this mission to the Belize Barrier Reef!
