My Travel Story

Hi friends my name is Gabrielle! I am in the process of fundraising for my volunteer program in Puerto Rico with International Volunteer HQ. In 2022 I was struggling mentally and really wanted to go on a vacation, so last minute I booked a trip to Puerto Rico with one of my best friends. That trip was beyond magical for me and I immediately fell in love with the island. My friend and I met a sweet couple on the airplane who had lived on the island and one of which was originally from Puerto Rico. They went out of their way to give us the full native experience. They taught us about all of the struggles the islanders have been facing; such as US colonialism, power outages, lack of resources during and after hurricanes (specifically Maria at the time) and many tax and other political struggles the islanders face. My heart was set on fire and I immediately started to research the island further and commenced teaching myself Spanish. I wanted so terribly to help the islanders because the US has failed so terribly to do so in far too many areas. Since 2022 I have visited again and my passion to help has only increased. In order to jump start my long term goals to help the island I felt that volunteering through a program that is already established would be my best way to start the process and learn more about how to best help the island and the kind and loving people who live there!
