My Travel Story

by: Joel Acquah Start Date: Feb 25, 2020 - End Date: Jun 23, 2020
The BNC (Bernard Nordkamp Centre) is a non-profit after school educational program located in the township of Katutura, Windhoek, Namibia. They serve 150 children from the local community. The after School classes are geared toward helping learners in grades 1 to 7 in English (reading and writing) and Maths.  The teachers follow the Namibian curriculum and textbooks that are provided for every child.

I will be working within the community helping to fight poverty by reaching out to the poorest and most vulnerable people. By helping these people gain access to food, shelter, work, education and healthcare. Schools in Namibia are often understaffed and poorly resourced, my volunteer work will help to improve this situation by helping teach Mathematics in the BNC.

I will also be volunteering in an orphanage to make a positive impact on the life's of numerous orphaned children. Within many areas of Namibia, thousands of families live in inadequate accommodation and children go to school in crumbling buildings, part of my volunteer work will involve a small building project helping construct better-quality homes and classrooms for children and their families.

I signed up to volunteer in Namibia because I want to challenge myself, develop my skills and also learn a variety of new ones. This opportunity will be extremely rewarding giving me the chance to give something back or make a difference to someone’s life. It gives me the opportunity to be apart of something bigger than myself.
Volunteering abroad in Namibia will allow me to travel with a purpose. This in turn I believe will change my perspective on how I see the world, I will come into contact with people on a daily basis from different countries, backgrounds and quality of life. I feel this shift in perspective opens my mind to what is truly important.

Another amazing motivator for my volunteering in Namibia is the insightful, real-world experiences that I as a volunteer will gain. I will gain a hands-on experience, painting and building, teaching underprivileged children and working in an orphanage. I feel my actions and your actions, whether big or small will have an impact on someone’s life. By donating you are helping make this possible and achievable. I will be extremely grateful and thankful for any amount donated
