My Travel Story

Hi!

I am Bojana Drca from Belgrade, Serbia. I attend the Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut. I wish to engage in a meaningful experience for the summer, and I have always been fascinated by the Himalayas. This summer, with your help, I would be able to experience this wonder of the world, while meeting people around the world, and learning about traditions, cultures, nature and myself. The journey will begin on July 5, 2020 and it will last till August 2. 

"The Himalaya Environment and Leadership Program supports youth in discovering and exercising their agency in a complex world. It takes place in Ladakh, a high-altitude region in the Northern corner of the Himalaya known for rugged mountains and Tibetan Buddhist culture. This is a powerful setting for an expedition and development study, and inspires us to believe that the way things are is not the way they must be.  We start with one week in Ladakh, India and the three following weeks we spend hiking different peeks in the Himalayas such as Kang Yatse 2, Dzo Jongo, and either Golep, Stok or Mentok Kangri. Together we will plan and cook meals; find and set up camps; use mountaineering equipment to move across difficult terrain; look after ourselves and each other, and take and manage risks intelligently as individuals and as a group."

I wish to develop a new understanding and respect for the planet and explore solutions to global problems. Additionally, I wish to pursue a career in environmental science and during the expedition I will expand my knowledge. I believe that this expedition will be a great step in my self-discovery, when I see the world’s greatest untouched and pure area of clean air, where the science of the physical and environmental processes dominate without the intervention of the human hand. It will be a unique experience, where at night I will only be able to see the stars and the clear night sky. I believe that such an environment will definitely make a lasting impact on me.
