My Travel Story

by: James Smith Start Date: Sep 10, 2013 - End Date: Nov 30, 2013

Projects Abroad is a family-run business, with nearly 500 trained staff in 27 destinations, offering over 100 generic placements and a wide choice within these placements, the organistaion now the world's leading overseas volunteering and gap-year foundation. The program offers volunteers to become part of a community in one of 27 developing countries, to live and work beside local people, understand their world and make friends for life.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

For 8 weeks over December and January I will be visiting the Ethiopian Capital of Addis Ababa. My placement in Ethiopia consists of 3 very exciting and challenging components. During the day I will be teaching 5th and 6th grade Spoken English at a local school, while 3 mornings a week I will be coaching a boys volleyball team and supervising organised school sport. During the first 2 weeks of January, Ethiopian school children sit their exams, through which time I will be assisting community projects and care work. The third component of my experience will involve running with local Ethiopian athletes around Addis Ababa and surrounding areas of an afternoon.

Once my 2 months with Projects Abroad has come to an end, I will be venturing from Addis to Northern Ethiopia, where for 12 days I will trek the Simien Mountains, visit the Rock-Hewn Churches of Tigray and meet the Mursi people in the Lower Omo Valley.

Every contribution will not just assist in getting me to Ethiopia but will provide vital support for local Ethipoian school children through sport and education.
