My Travel Story

by: Jan Wall Start Date: Jan 25, 2016 - End Date: Apr 5, 2016
Friends, I am about to start one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences in my life. I am Jan Wall – and I would like to ask for your help.

Last week I was accepted to volunteer to teach English to elementary and high school children in the foothills of the Himalayas in Annapurna, Nepal. I’ll be working with a non-profit organization committed to raising the educational standards of school age children in this part of the world: Trek To Teach. This organization has already established teaching programs in 6 communities and will kick off programs in several more communities in 2016. It’s also raising money to rebuild schools that were devastated by the earthquake in Nepal last April. To learn more about Trek to Teach, click on the button here to visit their web site.

In order to prepare for this venture, I took the 120-hour Professional Level TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course. I’m delighted to report that I completed the course with one of the top scores.

But I can’t handle this teaching venture on my own, I need your help. I need to raise $9,000 US to fund my three-month journey. This money will pay for my teaching expenses. It will go to pay for my travel to Kathmandu and Annapurna. It will pay for my basic living expenses during my stay in Nepal. Trek To Teach will use some of this money to pay for curriculum materials and teaching supplies. The school where I will teach has little more than a few concrete walls.

I’m asking you to contribute whatever you can to help cover my out-of-pocket expenses. Everyone who contributes will have access to my weekly blog about my experiences in Nepal. But if you can dig a little deeper into your pockets, I’ll make sure you get a memento you will treasure for the rest of your life. I will develop an 8.5” by 11” hard back coffee table book with stunning photographs of the Himalayas as well as the school children and the community where I teach. I’ll write a narrative explaining the back story behind these pictures. I’ll send a copy of this book to everyone who contributes $300 US. For those who are able to contribute $600, I’ll send a large format coffee table book with far more photographs, stories, and pages. The acknowledgments page will recognize everyone who contributes. For those generous souls willing to contribute more than $1,000, I can connect you to the founder of the organization to find a specific school project that can have your name on it.

But more than this, you will know that your contribution is helping to make a material difference in the lives of hundreds of school age children who simply would not have the opportunity to learn English from a native English speaker otherwise. And, of course, it will help me have one of the most thrilling experiences in my life.

My American friends will get a tax-deductible receipt. Canadians and others will enjoy my gratitude! In any case, you will have my assurance that your money will be used exactly as I promised here. You can make a huge difference with even a small contribution. My teaching rotation is scheduled to start in early April so I urge you to help me reach my $9,000 goal quickly. And thanks in advance for your help.
