My Travel Story

by: Kellie Mahoney Start Date: Apr 13, 2014 - End Date: Aug 10, 2014
First of all, I just wanted to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to those who have supported me thus far. I wanted to make a few updates on my trip that will be coming up on September 29th. Once I arrive in Honduras, I will receive a Visa that will be good for up to 90 days. Once that mark has arrived, I will need to leave the country for 72 hours. The cost of flights from Honduras to Tennessee and back add up every 90 days. I have an opportunity to be involved with a fellowship for missionaries to extend my trip for up to 5 years, without having to leave every 90 days. The cost of this fellowship is $300 for one year. It would be very beneficial for me to be a part of this, since I would be making only a small stipend a month while working in Honduras.

Also, I am beginning to gather materials that would be beneficial in the classroom for my students and myself before I depart. I am looking for basic textbooks (English, grammar, math & science), small individual white boards, whiteboard markers, English games, erasers, pens and pencils, colored pencils, and colored paper. The center where I will be working does not have an address that the post office can mail to. I would only receive mail through other volunteers and mission teams that come though.

THANK YOU for continuing to support this opportunity.

I can't believe that I am in the double digits for the countdown to Honduras! I am feeling pretty lucky and thankful for those who have supported me thus far. I wanted to give some updates on where I am as of now, as well as what I will be preparing for in the upcoming months.

I have been asked to become a member of a fellowship for volunteers. This opportunity allows for me to stay in Honduras for up to 5 years, without having to leave every 90 days to renew my visa.

This fellowship is $300 at the most. It would be beneficial for me to be a part of this, since the flights back home would add up. It also gives me more chances to be a part of Honduras. I will be working with young women ages 18-19 years old. They have been nominated or recommended by someone in Honduras to attend The Leadership Center. Aside from teaching, I would also be mentoring these ladies outside of class. I would like to take every opportunity to spend time with these girls and take in as much as Honduras as I can.

I am also still seeking out teaching materials to take down with me. I will not have an address to receive mail due to the location of this organization. If you have any paper, individual dry erase boards, dry erase makers, colored pencils, pencils, pens, recent textbooks (math, science, English, grammar) that you have around or would like to donate, please let me know. I would be happy to arrange a pick up or drop off.

    THANK YOU!
