Help my 1st Graders go on their first field trip
My Travel Story
I'm a 1st grade elementary school teacher in El Paso ISD. Travis Elementary is in an impoverished area of town. Many of my students have families that can't afford backpacks, new shoes, or a home to live in. Two of my students are homeless a majority of the year, another student comes to school wearing the same clothes for 2 weeks because the family doesn't have funds to afford to wash clothes. CPS, churches giving out free food and parents in the hospital or in jail are a common occurrence among my students. However tough home life may be, the students love coming to school to be a classroom family with me. I create a safe, loving place where it’s fun and provide a positive learning environment. I created RIDE THE WAVE LEARNING LLC to promote education and bring extra tutoring to those students in need.
The business RIDE THE WAVE LEARNING LLC brings opportunities for students to learn in a tutoring environment. Funds from my company go towards funding my elementary 1st grade classroom. Funds from my business are used for supplies, field trip opportunities and science lab materials for the students.
Our school does not have funding for field trips. The parents do not have the ability to fund the field trip either. I would love to take all of first grade Mono/Dual lingual classes to the new El Paso Science Museum, La Nube STEAM Discovery Center in order to promote science, explore the community, and that learning is safe and fun for all.
You should select me because even if I can't fund the field trip in total, the funds will go towards the students, advocating for the school community and achieving educational goals
I'm a mom of 3 boys, married for 15 years to a military man and have lived all over the US, my passion is advocating for children as a full time 1st grade teacher. I have a masters degree in Biology and love the science of life. My first career was a woman in science, creating the first baboon embryonic stem cell line and creating frozen zoos through methods in cryopreservation. My second career was a stay at home mom that homeschooled my own children, it wasn’t until my third career that I began teaching in the public sector and I absolutely love it when I can inspire someone for the rest of their live, to pay it forward and learn.
My favorite quote is from the great Maya Angelou. “ If you get, then give. If you learn, then teach.”
