My Travel Story

This experience will directly support my goal of becoming a Physician Assistant. Working with children and teens in Porto will deepen my understanding of communication, empathy, and cultural awareness—skills that are essential in medicine. Volunteering abroad will also show me how health and education intersect in different communities, which I hope to carry into my future work with underserved populations.

While in Porto, I’ll help teach basic English in fun, creative ways and support youth in after-school programs. Many of these kids come from challenging backgrounds, and my goal is to create a safe, supportive space where they feel seen, heard, and encouraged. Whether it’s through art, games, or conversation, I want to uplift their confidence and curiosity.

I’ve always been passionate about working with young people, especially those who may need extra encouragement and support. Growing up, I had mentors who believed in me during hard times, and I want to be that person for someone else. This project also ties into my love for service and my desire to grow into a healthcare provider who is as compassionate and well-rounded.

Portugal stood out to me because of its rich culture, strong sense of community, and the unique opportunity to work directly with youth in a hands-on setting. I wanted to go somewhere where I could be in a new environment while still making a real impact. Porto felt like the perfect place to do that!

It’s a chance to grow, serve, and learn in ways that go beyond the classroom. It’s meaningful because it allows me to connect with others on a human level, to share in their joy and struggles, and to be a small part of something bigger than myself.
