My Travel Story

As a Spanish major I want to study abroad to perfect my skills in the Spanish language. My mother is from Italy and I grew up speaking both English and Italian. Over the years I have realized how important it was for me to be fully immersed in the Italian language and culture to become as fluent as I am today. Because of my experience as a bilingual individual I realize that the best way to acquire fluency in Spanish is by living in a Spanish speaking country for a considerable amount of time. Participating in the international program offered by the University of New Mexico will afford me this opportunity. In addition, I am persuaded that this experience will broaden my horizons and give me the chance to meet people from other countries. I look forward to learning about the Spanish culture, traditions, and history. It is my hope that the friendships that I will develop while abroad will be enriching and help me become a more complete individual.

I selected Spain as my destination not only because it is a Spanish speaking country but also because of its rich history, art, and cultural heritage. During my studies of the Spanish language I became increasingly intrigued with and fascinated by the Spanish culture, religion, history, and traditions. I selected the University of Granada because it offers an intensive Spanish studies program that will allow me to progress quickly in the mastering of the language. The program is aggressive and requires the completion of each course in a three week period. I believe this approach will be most effective in enabling me to progress more rapidly towards my goal of fluency in Spanish.

My ultimate educational goal is to obtain a Master's degree in International Business. I realize that learning new languages is an essential component to achieve this objective and that is why I chose to double major in Political Science and Spanish. One of the main reasons I have chosen this career path is because I love traveling abroad, meeting new and different people, and experiencing and learning about their culture and ways. I believe that the semester abroad program in Spain will be a positive enriching experience and will have lasting impact on my career and most importantly my life.
