My Travel Story

by: E'Myliah Wilkes Start Date: Aug 31, 2023 - End Date: Dec 30, 2023
This trip is personal, and permanant. I'm super excited to return home to St. Louis, Mo. with my almost 5yo ( turns 5 on Labor day.) This trip will impact our lives greatly. As a single & first time Mother, it's been a struggle, I've been told by not many that it gets easier, thus far it's gotten harder. Though I am BEYOND confident that once back in St. Louis, where I know peaople, places, and things better, and know how to navigate the city, I just know my child will THRIVE! I'm so excited, so anxious to get there, and show my child all the wonderful placed that I adored growing up. Like riding the metrolink down to the Union Station, walking through there, and hearing all the talented singers at The Fudgery singing whilst creating fresh fudge. Or going to The Gateway Arch, I can already see those big beautiful eyes growing even bigger with exitement, also taking my child to Cardinal games, enrolling him into the school up the street from my childhood home. every year since my child's first Birthday, I've wanted to take my child to Branson, Mo. Though the pandemic happened, and I've still yet to ever take my child. Though to just get back to St. Louis, Mo. IS the dream trip for us.  I know once there, I'll be able to make a difference in my old community in a major way, as I've always wanted to. There's a program there that helps children in the community with school supplies, food, clothes, shoes, etc. not just before the new school year, though they help them ALL YEAR ROUND. I'm grateful to have grown up in that community, and to actually have frineds from my high school that are volunteers through that program. So I have connections that can get me in the program, so that I can give back through community service. I can feel it all in my spirit that it's time to get back home, where it all started for me. I grew up a "latchkey" kid, it was actually 7 of us, so I know what it's like to be a child in the neighborhood, needing an after school snack before focusing on homework, or needing a new backpack because the one from last year has holes in it from carrying books as heavy as me. I want ever so much to get back home, and show my child what it's all about, GIVING. Sure I can do that here in Oklahoma, and I have, donated all of my child's gently used clothes, shoes, walkers, stroller, pack n play, coats, etc. Though it would just mean even more to me to go back to my old stomping grounds and help my old neighborhood out. That's why I'm so passionate about this project. I've been more than happy giving to my current community and surrounding communities, though home is where the heart is, and it's on my heart to get back home, and help there as I have here. I'm so excited oh my goodness, I can literally feel it in my body, just how monumental this trip is going to be. I can feel all the good, and wonderful, positive things to come from this trip back to St. Louis, Mo. Which my child has never been. I conceived there, though gave birth here in Oklahoma, though even my child is excited about this trip.
