My Travel Story

My name is Makayla, I am 17 years old and I am hoping to raise funds for a study abroad program in the upcoming fall. The main reason why I need to raise funds is because I have not had a normal stereotypical childhood. My younger brother was diagnosed with lymphoma leukemia when he was a year old. However, the chemotherapy they used caused issues and left him with multiple disabilities. While other children got to play sports, I got familiar with life in a hospital. I know the importance that nurses and doctors can play in your life. My brother continues to beat the odds, but he will never be a "normal" adult. He is 14 years old and he is finally starting to walk again. He will always have to rely on someone to care for him.

So for this exact reason, my mother calls me her legacy. She wants me to achieve my dreams. One dream that we both shared was for me to get accepted into the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She was ecstatic when I got in. However, neither of us expected that I would get on the waitlist due to the influx of so many students. UTK has a program that will allow me to study abroad in Argentina. I would be there for a semester in the upcoming fall and then come back to Knoxville, in the spring, to continue my education.

Any money I collect will be used solely on my trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and for my expenses for school. I am honestly excited about starting my life and achieving my goals. My majors will be anthropology and business.
I hope to change the world using my education to pursue in research and participate in seminars and help the world move forward. I wish to understand every single person as much as I possibly can, so that's why I might go into Forensic Psychology. This is my passion and I hope to change the world.

I chose Buenos Aires as it was the least expensive for my family, but I'm still very excited to implement myself in a new culture with a different language. The full cost of tuition for this fall is 16,000$. While I am signing up for scholarships and anything else I can, I hope to reach out for help in my community and the world.
