My Travel Story

One of the things I’ve wanted to do since starting college was to study abroad. However, I’ve never been able to fit it into my schedule and I don’t want to leave for a whole semester. I tried going this last summer, but it didn’t work out. I have rarely traveled outside of Missouri, let alone the country. I can even count on one hand the times I have gone outside of Missouri, and it’s usually been with family or to visit family rather than to explore a new city or state. It’s one of my life goals to be able to travel to Europe and experience different cultures other than the one I grew up with in the States.

One of my biggest passions is being able to learn new things from people that are different from me. Being able to travel outside of the country will allow me to immerse myself in unfamiliar settings and understand the country I go to a little more. When I first realized I wanted to major in journalism in high school, my first career goal for the future was to travel to different places and meet new and interesting people to understand their stories. I wanted to give someone that might not have the ability to tell their story the chance to do so – and still do. Even as I travel within the country, I’m always looking for new experiences and angles on a city that might have hundreds of stories already. I want to try and find new ways to see something that’s already been covered.

The Europe Tour during the 2023 Winter intersession will be perfect for my wants and fears in my last year of college. With it only being a two-week trip, I’ll be back to Columbia to finish out my senior year. It also counts for two of my journalism specialty courses, freeing my schedule a little bit for the spring semester and guaranteeing I graduate in the spring. I’ll be able to accomplish one of my life goals and travel outside of the United States, experience different cultures, and learn more about them. Since finding out about the trip, I have been very excited about it and cannot wait for it already.
