My Travel Story

by: Saoirse Ní Dheá Start Date: May 21, 2018 - End Date: Aug 6, 2018
I have wanted to go abroad and volunteer with children since I was 15 and older girls in my school volunteered in a school in India. Unfortunately I have never had the time or resources to do it myself. Having recently undergone a very tough year for personal reasons, I decided that it was now or never- it was time for me to get back to my roots and do something for other people, and also for myself because this is something I really want to experience.
I am a law student, and spent the last year doing an internship in an international corporate firm. This has allowed me to meet a lot of people from different backgrounds and cultures, which has strengthened my desire to volunteer abroad. Most importantly, this experience has only reignited my humanitarian passion. Working for companies on corporate transactions can cause you to forget human issues, and only focus on the money and the hours billed; I have always had a desire to work within human rights. Working on corporate matters was never a passion for me. Legally, working in human rights hasn’t been an opportunity for me yet but I hope that whilst volunteering abroad my eyes will be opened to ways in which I can help children in disadvantaged countries by using my education (my law degree) to make a real difference. I would also like to inspire others to do the same.
