My Travel Story

by: Haidyn Ingram Start Date: Apr 17, 2025 - End Date: Nov 2, 2025
To my friends and family,
I’m excited to announce that I have been accepted into a volunteer program in Zanzibar through International Volunteer HQ in November 2025, where I’ll be teaching english maths and science in additon to participating in marine conservation. This opportunity Is really importnat to me, as it allows me to provide direct support to under-resourced communities while gaining invaluable life experiences.

Why Zanzibar?

Education:
Zanzibar faces many challenges in eductaion. This includes overcrowded or insufficient classrooms, a shortage of teachers (especially for mathematics and science), an uneven distribution of teachers and a shortage of learning materials. There is on Average 51 pupils per teacher in each classsroom making volenteers essential to help support students indvidually.

My role will include:
  • Teaching a range of subjects
  • Cooking and distributing meals
  • Engaging in play and informal education such as games
  • Supporting teachers with administrative tasks
  • providing one on one support to struggling students

Marine Conservation:
Zanzibar, rich in marine and terrestrial ecosystems, is home to a variety of species, including fish, corals, dolphins and sea turtles. Biodiversity not only secures local livelihoods such as fishing and tourism but is also a global ecological asset. However, these ecosystems are under serious threat due to the destruction of their habitats and climate change.

My Role will include:
  • Fish identification & monitoring on coral reefs,
  • Dolphin behavior observation,
  • Sea turtle conservation including beach and boat patrols and nest relocations.
  • Data collection on invasive species
  • Underwater or beach clean-ups
  • Environmental education in schools,
  • Recycling and upcycling projects,
  • Teaching local women and kids English and about the environment/ Assisting with women empowerment projects
  • Attending cultural workshops to help generate income for the community.

How you can help!
My goals is to raise $2100 to cover the cost of my program, this covers my entire stay on the island including accomadation, meals and transport to placemts. I will be personally covering the costs of my air tickets. Your donation will directly contribute to the education and care of children in need. I’m committed to sharing updates and photos during my time abroad so you can see the direct impact of your generosity.

This journey is one of both giving and learning, and I’m incredibly grateful for any support you can offer!
Thank you so much for helping me make a difference in Zanzibar
