My Travel Story

by: Shane Wood Start Date: Mar 7, 2018 - End Date: Aug 19, 2018
This trip is something I have wanted for a very long time. Not only will it enable me to obtain my TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certification it will also provide me a chance to immerse myself into a new culture and enhance my Spanish speaking abilities. I believe this trip will prepare me for teaching even more extensively overseas. Since this trip is faculty-led  I will have a chance to be guided along before I go off by myself to find teaching opprtunites abroad.
In addition to this, I will be providing much needed training to future tourism professionals on the sturcutre and grammar rules of English while in Mexico. I will have a chance to embrace this new cultural while making a noteable impact through teaching these students what they need to know in order to succeed in their careers. I am very passionate aboout this because it will give me the chance to prepare myslef for my future career as well by helping people. Going into TESL all I really wanted to do was be able to empower people through language skills and help them achieve their language goals.

I chose Mexico because Mexican culture has always fascinated me. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest I have lived through a lot of rain and cluds so the tropical climate of Mexico also intrigues me. I love how community orientated our neighbors to the south are and I throughly enjoy the food as well. I think it is fate that this program is held in Mexico every year because I eventually want to teach English here during my career as well.

Overall this is an amazing experience because I get to immerse myself into a culture I have always wanted to explore while using my teaching skills to enhance other peoples lives. I am excited for this opportunity to both explore and better myslef while helping students learn the skills they need to enhance and better themselves!
