My Travel Story

Hello!

My name is Minnie, im 19 and i am a Psychology student at my local university. On September 28th, 2023, I went to the emergency room due to a shallow pain in my leg that had been bothering me for the past few days. Initially, i hadnt thought much of it because i had no previous health issues, and not been significantly sick in the past. That was until the doctor had told me I had Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Following my diagnosis, i had to withdraw from school and was admitted to the hospital straight away where i began Chemo therapy. In the coming weeks, i lost 25 lbs due to difficulties eating, i was confined to my bed, because  the pain in my leg became excruciating, and i was isolated from the life i once had filled with friends and laughter. The physical toll was bad but I would argue that maintaining my mental health  was even harder. I had nightmares every night, and i could barely recognize the thin, balding girl in the mirror. After my first two rounds of chemo, I started to take my treatments better. I was able to walk, and participate in hobbies like baking and cooking while I was confined to my house. This experience helped me to realize how quickly life could be taken away from you, how your health, and your support system are big pillars for a happy life. I learned that I didnt want to die, after being suicidal for years. I wanted to be able to travel, to complete my education, fall in love, and watch my siblings grow. This september I will be re-enrolling in my program, with hopes of completing it in 2027, crossing one thing off my list.  This fundraiser is helping me to complete one of the things I thought i wouldnt be alive to do.
