My Travel Story

We are South African sisters who recently completed our studies in Architecture and Interior Design.  We currently have a few months break and so we decided to look for short-term internships or programmes where we could gain experience and learn more.  This is when we learnt of the Unearth the World (UTW) Volunteer Hut Building Project in Zambia.  What an exciting project, and perfect fit for us!  The project is focused on building safe, durable homes for families affected by AIDS in the rural Zambian village of Mwandi.  The financial donations from volunteers allows for the purchase of better quality materials and thus enables the community to build safer houses.  We would love to use our knowledge of construction to improve these houses even further!  As a part of our studies we have had some experience with earth construction and community projects and are fully aware of the physical demands and challenges which arise during these types of projects.  We know it is hard work and we are ready for the challenge!!

This volunteer project will not only be enriching and rewarding, but will also be an educational experience for us and we hope to learn more about truly sustainable building and gain knowledge which we can take with us in our respective careers whilst immersing ourselves in a new culture.

Charity starts at home, and what better place to start than the beautiful continent of Africa.  This project combines a number of our passions - Africa, Architecture, community and travel and we cannot wait to make a difference!
