My Travel Story

by: Rahima Begum Start Date: Nov 16, 2015 - End Date: Jan 18, 2016
Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time to read my campaign.

Those who know me will agree that I am a sucker for exotic 5 star holidays, luxury escapes and hidden gems. With everything that's going on in the world, I decided it was time to think less about myself (by obsessively ticking off a bucket list) and time to give something back to those who are less fortunate and living in humble conditions.

I will be volunteering at an orphanage in Cambodia for 2 weeks in January 2016 through a globally trusted and recognised company called IVHQ (International Volunteer HQ Limted). This campaign seeks to ask for your donations, however small, to help me with my quest. If you are unable to contribute a monetary donation, you can also help by offering unwanted toys or children's clothes. Any donations will be humbly and gratefully received. You can do this by clicking on the 'Fund Campaign' link on the right.

Cambodia has a high number of orphaned children relative to the population. Many children have lost their parents due to HIV, while other parents cannot afford to provide their children with food, accommodation, or an education. As a result, many children living in orphanages in Cambodia still have parents or relatives that they may visit from time to time. Volunteers on this project usually work up to 8 hours per day. Childcare work ranges from administration, cooking, cleaning, feeding, caring for children, to teaching, assisting with homework and arranging activities, such as painting, singing, and sports activities. At all placements, the children attend public schools and most orphanages have fixed weekly activities, focusing mainly on education, such as Khmer literacy and English language classes. Topics such as morality, hygiene and Khmer traditions are also discussed with the children. Many orphanages also support creative activities, like painting, drawing, origami or Apsara dancing (Khmer Traditional dance), and some orphanages organize visits to the beach or local villages.

Many thanks again. I am super excited to be doing this and will provide photos and stories upon my return.

Rahima
