Kenzie Beck's Study Abroad in London Campaign

Hi, I am Kenzie Beck and I am a junior at the University of Colorado Boulder majoring in Sociology with a minor in Education.  I have been accepted into the CIEE program (non-profit world leader in international education)  through CU which gives me an incredible opportunity to study in London this summer (2016)!!

Why London you ask?  There are many reasons why I chose this location but I will only bore you with a few:)   I am excited to see new places, meet new life-long friends and experience a new culture.  As a Sociology/Education major, I will be able to see first hand the differences in the British educational system and that of the United States.  I can bring this experience back with me and utilize it in my future as either a victim's advocate and/or teacher.  London is also where my Aunt Susie studied when she was a student at CU Boulder a few years back;)  My Aunt Susie (and Uncle Leon) have given me the love of travel by taking me to wonderful destinations while I was growing up.  I would like to see the country she studied in.

Since I decided recently to apply to this program (I did not think we could afford for me to study abroad so I did not look into it earlier, then I found out about CIEE and their recommendation to utilize this site for fundraising), I sprung this trip on my mom without a lot of time for her and I to save money. With my brother Scott attending CU this fall as a freshman and me starting my senior year, my mom will have two kids in college.  She has raised both of us by herself since we were babies without financial support from anyone and adding an additional $10,000.00 burden to her at this time is not something I feel comfortable doing.  She has sacrificed everything for Scott and I and I do not want this opportunity to be financially devastating for her, but I know she desperately wants me too have such an opportunity.

Currently I am working as an unpaid intern at MESA (Moving to End Sexual Assault) and I love it!  Helping individuals who are victims of sexual assault has been life-changing for me.  Due to the time commitment to MESA and being a full-time student I cannot work a paying job right now.  Otherwise, I would work full-time to make money to study abroad.  Those of you who know me well, know that I am a hard worker.  Every summer for the past 4 summers I have worked full-time at Cherry Hills Country Club as a server.  Since this London program is during the summer, I will have to work one month less than normal and this will impact my earnings (used for tuition/room & board/books/etc. each year I have been in college).  I have some savings from summer work and my mom will contribute what she can for this trip, but we do not have nearly enough to fund the entire program.  As you can imagine the cost of flights, tuition, apartment rent, food and spending money is not inexpensive to say the least.

Any contribution that you can make would be extremely appreciated and will be going to a wonderful cause.    Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide and I promise to keep you all up-to-date during my trip through Facebook and Instagram!

Thank you so much,
Kenzie Beck
