My Travel Story

I am a 71 yo Sailor with over 20 years of ocean sailing experience on the East Coast of Australia, across the parts of the Pacific and extensively throughout Asia. My plan to circumnavigate the globe on my 38 ft Swanson Sloop was abruptly disrupted last year when I contracted a rare & life threatening fungus infection contracted whilst visiting a bat invested cave in South Borneo. After 6 weeks of intensive care and ongoing medical treatment by about a dozen specialists and doctors, in Perth, my health has been restored with the assistance of ongoing medications. As I needed to sell my yacht and use the resulting funds to address the above circumstances, I am now planning to acquire another yacht and rekindle the circumnavigation challenge. The broad plan is to raise funds and complete detail planning in 2020-2021, and then recommence the circumnavigation in 2022 subject to the Covid situation. Discussions have commenced with research specialists on how I might use the journey to gain further insights into the ‘histoplasmosis’ disease which is common in a mild form throughout other countries. Your contributions will go towards the costs of suitably equipping a sailing vessel for the journey expected to take about 6 years and involve myself, solo sailing part of the way and potentially two or three crew on extended passages. Acquiring the sailing yacht is a major goal for 2021 and may benefit from additional funding or another approach yet to be established.
