My Travel Story

by: Nia Smith Start Date: Jul 30, 2018 - End Date: Jan 30, 2019
Greetings,

My name is Ms. Smith, and I am the Tenth and Eleventh Grade English Teacher at Baker College Prep in South Chicago. Baker Educators believe in investing in our students to "become civic-minded college graduates who will make a positive multi-generational change" within their community. I have the privilege to chaperone six scholars whose average GPA is a 4.12. These ladies are leaders in their classes and amongst their peers.

Our scholars are traveling to Panama during the Spring of 2019. This trip will enable them to experience a culture outside of their own, interact with students across the country, and experience the world's beauty. I chose Panama because Panamanians embody working and supporting their neighbors even through their country's challenges. Although Chicago is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States, it is also one of the most segregated. All students should be given the opportunity to positively contribute to our great nation regardless of their race, family income, and residential neighborhood. I hope this opportunity will enlighten our travelers to find ways to pour into our great but struggling city so that one day all of Chicago may thrive.
