South Africa Human Rights Internship Helping Refugees
My Travel Story
My name is Karen, I'm a sophmore Psychology major at PSU.
During April of this year which was when COVID began to run rampant, my house caught fire and I lost everything. All of the money that I had in my savings for this trip was spent in replacing basic necessities.
Why South Africa?
My dream career is to become a doctor that volunteers to help refugees around the world. Refugees leave their home countries seeking safety and become outsiders in a strange land. As an Afro-Latina in the US, I have experienced a similar less extreme feeling at certain points in my life and would not wish it on anyone. This internship will allow me to work with a community organization in Cape Town, South Africa that aids refugees.
I have been looking forward to this experience since last fall. Although I have lost a lot in a short period of time this year, I hope that with your help through this internship I will be able to give back to the global community and make another persons day brighter.
