My Travel Story

by: DIMITRIOS KONTIZAS Start Date: Mar 6, 2024 - End Date: Sep 5, 2024
My first trip to Kyarusesha and Hoima in Uganda occured February of 2023. My visit there was to a friend of mine who is a midwife at maternity Clinics in Hoima, Runga and Kyarusesha. Usually, the help she gets is from her colleagues from tthe medical department - but with me it was the first time that an artist got to help in this way. So, my mission was to, voluntarily, paint murals on the walls of the clinics in all three cities / villages. I did manage to paint the pediatric ward in Kyarusesha. Unfortunately i did not have enough time to complete my project to Hoima and Runga.

All the expences (tickets, accomodation, food etc.) where covered by me - and it was worthy of the effort, time and money. At this point though, i cannot afford to make a second trip to fulfill this project. Therefore, through this platform i want to motivate people to fund my second travel (16 days) to Uganda in early 2025, so i can finish the paintings on the walls of the two clinics.

Kids struggle in finding suitable shoes
Children have no access to new shoes, therefor, they wear whatever they can find. In this picture, the little girl wears two different left sided slippers - in color and size.

Using screen printing as a painting tool
I used all forms of art to create murals on the walls of the clinic in Kyarusesha, Uganda. This one is a screen that depicts Frida Kahlo and I printed direct on the walls using oil paints.
