Medical Internship...International Style!
My Travel Story
Through my studies in Health Sciences on track to be a Physicians’ Assistant I have found an interest in working in rural settings and/or clinics in underserved areas. This interest has opened me up to the opportunity to travel on a study abroad program. I initially looked at the options through the college that I attend, but the options that are offered interfere with the last few track meets in the spring season as well as a research program in early May, which makes me ineligible to go. This did not stop me from looking elsewhere. I found International Medical Aid where they take medical interns from across the world to shadow medical professionals at a local hospital and teach various health education programs at local schools in locations such as Mombasa, Kenya. I filled out a written application, had an interview, then I was accepted into the program! The program offers flexible start dates and enriching experiences that is exactly what I am interested in doing in the future. This opportunity will allow me to learn from renowned Physician Assistants about the work they have done, how they got to where they are, challenges they have faced, and overall experiencing shadowing in a location where there is much to learn from.
