Vet Tech's in Belize Study Abroad
My Travel Story
I’m excited to share an incredible opportunity I’ve been given—to join Professor Tillman’s veterinary team on a hands-on educational trip to Belize. This isn’t just a chance to travel—it’s a deeply meaningful step toward my future as a veterinary technician and a chance to make a real impact in communities that need it most.
I’m currently raising $4,000 to cover the cost of travel, accommodations, program fees, and supplies. Any amount you can give—no matter how small—will help me reach this goal and take part in this life-changing experience. If you’re not able to donate, sharing this campaign with your network would mean the world to me. Even donating pop cans would be much appreciated! I understand this is a big ask and it is well out of my comfort zone to ask but this is a once in a lifetime experience for me.
My passion for animal care runs deep. I’ve dedicated myself to becoming a skilled, compassionate veterinary technician and this program will only help broaden my goals. The chance to work in the field, alongside experts and local partners, will help me apply everything I’ve learned in the classroom and at the ER clinic to real-world situations. I’ll gain critical clinical experience, broaden my cultural understanding, and learn how veterinary medicine can adapt in underserved and resource-limited areas.
Belize faces a major shortage of accessible veterinary care, especially in rural communities. Many families rely on animals for livelihood and companionship, yet regular vet care is often unavailable or unaffordable. With Professor Tillman’s group, we’ll be providing spay/neuter services, basic veterinary care, and animal health education. The goal is sustainability—equipping local communities with the tools and knowledge they need to care for their animals long-term.
This project isn’t just about my growth—it’s about giving back. We’ll be working with local shelters, farms, and pet owners to improve animal health, reduce stray populations, and promote humane treatment. Every animal we help and every person we educate will have a ripple effect through the community. I believe that compassion is contagious—and that small, intentional actions can lead to lasting change.
Participating in this trip will give me:
- Clinical experience with real cases under the guidance of experienced professionals
- Exposure to tropical veterinary medicine and zoonotic diseases
- Confidence and adaptability in fieldwork and cross-cultural environments
- Networking with mentors and peers in the field
- A powerful story of service and learning to carry into my future caree
