My Travel Story

by: Alleya Bourne Start Date: Feb 19, 2020 - End Date: Aug 18, 2020
Mental health is one of the largest issues between adolescent and college students in Indonesia, especially Yogyakarta. Mental health can be considered taboo or is stigmatized, so discussions on this topic are not frequent occurrences, as they may be here in Canada. I am participating in this project to encourage people in Yogyakarta from all walks of life to learn, talk, reflect and engage with others on all issues relating to mental health.

This volunteer opportunity is in line with Sustainable Development Goal #3 - Good health and well being.

In my pursuit of a career in neuroscience, I have come to appreciate the importance of mental health in all facets of life. I recognize that mental health issues are something that everyone faces in their lifetime, and that not all people have access to the resources and help to understand and ultimately manage their mental health.

My passions for helping others and mental health intersect in this volunteer opportunity in Yogyakarta. I believe I will make a meaningful impact on the lives of those I will reach through this adventure, as I would be able to use the knowledge and skills from my past experiences to foster connections with locals and engage in meaningful exchanges on all issues relating to mental health.
