Supporting Indian Crafts Woman & Volunteering in Oz
My Travel Story
In Australia, volunteering with permaculture projects and eco-villages will strengthen my understanding of sustainable living systems, which directly influences how I source materials, design my work, and run my creative practice. Together, these experiences will shape a career grounded in craftsmanship, environmental responsibility, and global collaboration.
In Australia, I will contribute hands-on labor and creative support to permaculture initiatives, eco-villages, and local arts and community events. These projects depend on collaboration and shared effort, and my time and skills will help strengthen sustainable food systems, community spaces, and cultural events.
In India, I will support local women artisans by purchasing their work directly and reselling it through ethical channels, ensuring they receive fair compensation and greater visibility. By building ongoing relationships rather than one-time transactions, I aim to create sustainable income opportunities and amplify their craftsmanship beyond local markets.
This travel experience directly supports my long-term path as a silversmith, artist, and ethical small-business owner. In India, I will continue my silversmithing training while learning traditional techniques from local craftspeople, deepening both my technical skills and cultural understanding of metalwork. Working closely with artisans—particularly women—will expand my knowledge of sustainable production, fair trade practices, and supply chains rooted in respect rather than exploitation. I will also organise trade with these atrisians and sell their crafts back in the uk to help support them and their communities.
I am deeply passionate about the intersection of art, sustainability, and community. Craft has always been more than a product to me—it is a way of preserving culture, telling stories, and creating meaningful connections between people. This project allows me to live my values by learning from communities that prioritize environmental care, traditional knowledge, and collective wellbeing. Supporting women artisans and learning from eco-focused communities feels aligned with both my creative identity and my responsibility as a global citizen.
Australia is a global leader in permaculture, eco-village design, and community-based sustainability practices. Learning directly from these environments offers invaluable, practical knowledge that cannot be replicated in a classroom.
India is one of the world’s richest centers of traditional craftsmanship and metalwork, and it is also where many women artisans face barriers to accessing fair markets. India offers both advanced silversmithing knowledge and the opportunity to engage ethically with craft traditions that have been passed down for generations.
This journey represents a turning point in my personal and professional growth. It allows me to learn by doing, to build relationships rather than simply observe, and to align my creative work with real-world impact. As an artist and silversmith, it is important to me that my work reflects integrity—care for the earth, respect for culture, and support for the people behind the craft. This experience will shape not only how I create, but why I create, for years to come.
Beginning in Australia will give me the chance to earn some extra supportive income for the next phase of my business orientated goals in India
