My Travel Story

In the past in Indonesia the use of sea turtle eggs was strictly regulated and limited, but in the recent decades (since colonialisation) the quotas were far too high for being sustainable, and sea turtle eggs were also taken illegally. Therefore we think protecting the beaches is not enough and in highly populated areas not possible, it needs actively helping the sea turtles to survive the beginning of their life, because naturally only 1 sea turtle within 1000 will reach the age of 8 years, when they are old enough to lay eggs.

In Bangka Island, The effort to conserve turtles becomes complex, for there is a damage in the habitat (tin mining) and its getting small.

Tukik Babel is one conservation center of sea turtle in Bangka Island was created by Sian Soegito in the year 2008, out of his own interest for sea turtles.

From mid 2014 on, many Green Sea Turtles coming from his new external hatchery on the uninhabited island Pulau Dua, and he decided to keep some of them until they are grown up to be big enough for being safe from predators at sea, and for this purpose as well as for our visitors we have built a new big bassin in which these sea turtles are swimming

This research goal is to know the beach community support in the surrounding towards the research and to make a recommendation after knowing the chances and the obstacles in performing the turtles conservation. The research methods are field survey, interview and questionnaire by using quality and quantity approach to get the primary date. The samples used are some fishermen, tourists or comers, members of institutions or non institutions who know about turtles. Meanwhile the secondary data are collected from various sources such as the related institutions, from books or literatures also some other relevant sources.
