My Travel Story

From May 16-27, following my graduation from my Masters program, I have the incredible opportunity to travel to Sicily on a cultural immersion program with Carlow University. I have always dreamed of studying abroad and am so grateful for this opportunity! There is no doubt this will be a transformative educational journey. We will have the chance to immerse ourselves in the culture and history of Sicily, a region steeped in centuries of fascinating stories and breathtaking landscapes. These cultural experiences will no doubt make me a better clinician in my future practice as a speech-langauge pathologist. 

I will have the opportunity to embrace the rich culture of the region from tracing the footsteps of ancient civilizations in the Valley of Temples to enjoying the Mediterranean sun on the shores of San Vito Lo Capo. I will be visiting Mt. Etna and indulging in the flavors of local cuisine during a hands-on cooking class. These once in a lifetime experiences will leave a lasting mark on my journey.

Finally, a portion of this trip will be spent touring ISMETT-UPMC in Palermo - one of the leading transplant centers and specialty hospuitals in Europe. ISMETT has been providing specialized procedures for patients with complex diseases since its inception in 1997.  It is an invaluable experience to see firsthand the differences and similarities that exist between cultures with regard to medical care.

With generous support, I can turn this dream experience into a reality, allowing me to expand my horizons, foster deeper cultural understanding, and create lifelong memories before I embark on my next journey following graduate school!
