My Travel Story

As a little girl, I have always imagined what it would feel like to visit another country, breathing different air and seeing new things. I have always imagined a completely different place with vibrant colors and lively people all over the streets laughing, dancing, and selling the perfect souvenir. The thought of tasting new foods with different flavors and spices excites me still, I want to experience it all.

After taking my first, college level, Spanish course I knew I wanted to fully immerse myself within the culture and become fluent in the language. Being fluent in Spanish is one future goal that I have, which is why I’ve declared Spanish as a minor. I know while studying abroad I will not become fluent overnight, but I do believe it will help me develop intercultural competencies and gain better communication skills. One of my personal goals is to travel and see the world; I believe studying abroad will be that first stepping stone for me. I want to experience new things and gain a better understanding of the world.

One professional goal I have is to work with a company that will allow me to travel for work and communicate with different customers of various backgrounds. Being that my major is Finance I know there are Finance companies that have a need for international financial advisors or someone that can easily translate and communicate with customers. Also, with Spanish being the second language in the United States I believe I can help many people defeat this communication barrier.

Not only will studying abroad help me achieve these goals, but it will also help me in the professional field. When I achieve my goal of fluency in Spanish I will be a more competitive opponent on paper, (referring to my resume) and I will have a bigger view on life. I will come back to my school, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, more independent and responsible with a boarder interpretation on the world and different cultures.

The reason I choose this specific program is because it meets and exceeds all of my aspirations I intend on accomplishing aboard. It will give me the ability to articulate my cultural experience and gain perspectives on my field of study. The internship I will be placed in is located in Santiago, Chile. I will be participating in a full-time internship and I will also be taking an academic seminar as well that will prepare me for leadership in globally interdependent and culturally diverse workforce. This program will have me staying with a Spanish speaking family, in the city. This will give me the perfect opportunity to learn, hands on, more about their culture and how to communicate. This program will give me a chance to learn way more than I ever could from a textbook, or classroom at my university.
