My Travel Story

About a year ago, I became graduate fresh out of high school. By then, most of my batch mates had already applied for their dream universities, whereas those that haven’t been able to do so yet had to be faced with the constant pressure to make decisions for college as soon as possible - I was part of the latter. To say that it was difficult would be an understatement. I was already lagging behind everyone else, and with the continuous remarks that I received about my inability to join a university this year, it all slowly began to take a toll on me. Regardless of that, however, I was still a fighter. I was determined to get myself the proper education that I yearned to achieve, even if it meant taking a massive risk along the way. Which is why I am here, writing this right now. Honestly? As cliché as it may sound, I’ve always wanted to study in a different country aside from my own. It’s not because I dislike it, it’s more so due to the fact that it’s in quite a bad spot right now. I’ve heard that studying in the UK presents you with a lot of advantages along the way. Aside from being able to study in an accredited university, I’m also curious as to what it is like to pursue my dream career in a country that I’ve never been to before! Which brings us to the field that I’ve taken a fancy to: art. Art is flexible, as I like to call it. Your canvas can be anything, as long as you have an idea or a vision. But what purpose does it serve, then? One can say that art is only ever made for aesthetic purposes, which is true for the most part. Although to me, it may be used to communicate through eye-catching visuals; and as someone who usually struggles with putting their thoughts into words, it can also be a pretty handy way to convey a message! The thing that matters though is how effectively you can turn such concepts into a reality. Whenever I gaze upon a piece of artwork, I usually find myself pondering over how it came to be: What was the process like? Did it take long to finish? How was this part of the piece rendered? My curiosity stems from the fascination that I get with each unique style that I come across, which then begs the question: Is my own work distinct enough to be recognised by others at first glance? That’s what I’m still trying to figure out. Let me wind things back a bit. Despite being forced into taking a STEM course, I was fortunate enough to be able to get various opportunities to work on creative projects ranging from painting to video editing, which was a good thing for an imaginative person like me – I even joined a couple of art competitions here and there! Yet it still wasn’t enough for me to discover my own style that I felt like I needed to showcase in my portfolio. And then came the end to my high school days. Soon after I graduated as an honour student, I made the choice to take a gap year because I still felt like my artistic experiences were “inadequate” for university. Like I’ve said before, it wasn’t an easy task because I only had online media to rely on. Nevertheless, I persevered. And here I am right now! Admittedly, the progress that I made felt slow at first, but now I can definitely see how much I’ve improved during the last couple of months. By attending university, I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to take the next big step in preparation for an art career, as well as develop my own style - maybe it may even serve as an eye-opener to new techniques that I am yet to learn about! I wholeheartedly admit that the decision I’ve made to become an international student is daunting to say the least, but that’s a risk that I am most willing to take.
