I’ve been trying to save enough to visit my family in the Philippines, but it feels impossible. No matter how much I work, something always comes up—bills, unexpected expenses—and the trip gets pushed further away. It’s been years since I’ve seen them, and the longer it takes, the more distant it feels. I miss them so much, but I’m stuck, too broke to make it happen. My family had done everything they could to help me get to the United States, saving every bit they could, even though they didn’t have much themselves. It broke my heart, knowing they were sacrificing so much for me. They worked extra hours, cut back on things they needed, all just to make it happen. I knew they wanted a better life for me, but the guilt of their sacrifice weighed heavily on me. I felt stuck in this cycle—too broke to visit them while they scraped together everything to send me to a place I hadn’t been able to come to.
