Pissed off with plastic pollution!
My Travel Story
I am a survivor! Yup the BIG C ! NOW I can conquer the world!
The last 3 years have been tough and have been financially challenging. Being faced with my own mortality really made me realise that the good years left to me must be lived with purpose and with gratitude! NO more just coasting along, wasting precious time. The time is always NOW to give back and make a difference . I want to make the rest of my time on earth really matter by volunteering to assist the many programmes in place that are making a huge impact to our eco system. They need our help! ! It sounds so simple, volunteering. It is ..but although my time and efforts are free the Programmes are not! They all require money. Money ! Money ! Money Money to pay the Organisation. This helps towards the cost of accommodation & utilities, administration and support & infrastructure. Money to pay for my flights, insurance , visas, passprt etc. Money to pay the bills while I am away. (I dont want to add to the problems of the world by becoming homeless !) .Money really does make the world go round and we can do nothing without it!
I did have money once. I have done the diving and tourist trips and satisfied my dreams to visit exotic places . Now I want to re-visit those places and actually give back something to ensure that my footprint this time is not as a tourist but as a visitor who is prepared to work towards the survival of the environment so future generations can benefit.
There are so many creatures on the verge of extinction and our marine eco systems are struggling. The ocean is our life. It provides food, oxygen , recreation, water. The coral reefs protect us from floods. The land is intrinsically linked to the ocean.
Marine and terrestrial biodiversity stabilise the eco system on these Islands. Overfishing, hurricanes, garbage , human interferance, climate change, invasion of foreign species and over building has had a detrimental effect.
My first project is in the Seychelles. Some duties will include :
• Wetland monitoring and rehabilitation
• Trapping & tracking studies on endemic terrapins
• Turtle distribution, abundance and habitat evaluation and mapping
• Coral reef restoration & rehabilitation
• Coral nursery and artificial reef projects
• Threat and impact analysis and mapping
• Development of management plans for critical habitats for nesting turtles
• Monitoring of important turtle nesting beaches in the south of Mahé on foot and by drone
• Production and dissemination of educational material such as posters and presentations
• Public awareness surveys
• Data handling and analysis
There are so many projects to assist with so I will be kept very busy.
- Clearing plastic from the ocean and beaches
- Nursing rescued turtles back to health for re-introduction into the ocean
- Monitoring the bird life and their nesting habits
- Monitoring turtle nesting sites against poaching
- Removing invasive plant species and planting indigenous flora.
- Educate the children about the importance of their oceans and wildlife and bring awareness in schools of the impotance of managing waste and plastic, and the economic impact of this for their futures.
