I am going to Ghana Africa from August-November for my Field Placement for my major. I have a passion for children and through this trip I will be able to help them in so many ways. This is something that has been on my heart for awhile, and when this opportunity arose I felt it was the right one for me. I have not been placed into a specific organization yet, but there are three locations I have a possibility of being placed in.

Save Them Young Orphanage: Save Them Young is Ghanaian-founded and Ghanaian-run. It houses about 70 children. A majority of the children are placed through the Ministry of Child Welfare due to abandonment, abuse or parents who are unable to provide care to their children.
City of Refuge Ministries: This Christian-based children’s home houses 40+ children. The home is American/Nigerian run and rescues children who have been sold into child slavery to fish on Lake Volta. There is also a school on-site for the children at the home and for the community. The campus also houses a group of single mothers who are engaged in an empowerment program.
The Child Protection Centre: From the information I have gathered, this is a newer program opportunity offered through the organization I am going through. This program is similar to the one in the United States, it tries to work with families to get the children back into the home. I am still not exact on all the areas that this program offers.

In all of these placements I will be working with children in different ways. I will not know exactly what I will be doing until I arive at my placement! I am there to help in anyway and also to learn and grow so I can better help children in the future. Exploring and experiencing other cultures is something I truly enjoy and hope to do in my career one day!

I am so excited, but also nervous for this amazing journey! Thoughts and prayers are gladly appreciated!
