Homelessness is a pressing issue affecting millions worldwide. In the US, for instance, over 771,480 people experienced homelessness in 2024, with a staggering 18% increase from the previous year. The demographics are concerning: 66.7% are single individuals, 33.3% are families with children, and nearly 150,000 children are homeless. The main causes include lack of affordable housing, unemployment, poverty, mental health issues, substance abuse, and domestic violence ¹ ² ³.

In South Africa, the 2022 census revealed 55,719 homeless individuals, with economic factors being the dominant cause (66.3%). Unemployment, lack of affordable housing, and substance abuse are significant contributors ⁴ ⁵.

The effects of homelessness are far-reaching, impacting physical and mental health, education, and overall well-being. People experiencing homelessness face higher mortality rates, reduced life expectancy, and increased risk of mental illness and substance abuse ⁶ ⁷.
