My Travel Story

by: Elena Marino Start Date: Oct 31, 2024 - End Date: Nov 16, 2024
I'm currently volunteering in Livingstone, Zambia, where I teach English to children aged 3 to 10 at an under-resourced school. These bright and eager learners face numerous challenges, from a lack of basic school supplies to inadequate seating in their classrooms. The youngest students sit on the ground, needing a carpet to make their learning environment more comfortable, while older children struggle with poor-quality pencils that frequently break, hindering their educational progress. Essential supplies such as notebooks, sharpeners, erasers, tape, and colored pencils are scarce. Many of these children also lack access to books. I am committed to changing this situation by raising funds for classroom essentials that will enhance their education and empower their dreams.

Beyond teaching, I dedicate my time to a nearby orphanage, home to 60 children who require basic support and a nurturing environment. These children, some of whom have experienced the loss of parents, abandonment, or abuse, are in dire need of clothing for the colder months and nutritious food, particularly protein, which is often too costly for the orphanage to provide. Unfortunately, many of them have only worn-out clothes, and the orphanage itself struggles with a leaking roof and moldy rooms that flood during rains. Although I cannot share photos due to privacy concerns, I can assure you that these children need care and essential resources to feel safe, valued, and empowered.

I chose to volunteer in Zambia because I firmly believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a healthy, supportive environment. These experiences are not only personally fulfilling but are also shaping me into a compassionate leader in the field of international aid. By donating, you are not only providing supplies and support but also joining a community committed to uplifting these children, bringing them joy, stability, and hope.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for being part of this journey. And if you choose to contribute or share this with your family and friends, thank you for helping me make a meaningful difference in their lives!
