My Travel Story

by: Melissa Lile Start Date: Jun 25, 2024 - End Date: Oct 24, 2024
We are a group of high school students with visual impairments, striving to broaden our horizons and enhance our independence, mobility, and cultural awareness. We aim to achieve this through an immersive and educational travel experience. Our planned educational trip to Portugal is not merely a travel experience; it is a meticulously structured program designed to foster independence, global citizenship, and life skills among us.

This journey, will provide us with opportunities to explore new cultures, develop essential life and employment skills, and prepare for higher education and future careers. Our group, the “Vision Voyagers,” currently consists of 8 students from Washington State School for the Blind 4 adult chaperones. Our itinerary includes 7 days in Lisbon and Porto, Portugal, where we will explore historical sites, museums, interact with local communities, and gain firsthand knowledge about different cultures.

Overall, the trip to Portugal will not only provide our students with unique educational experiences but also equip them with practical skills and cultural competence. These skills will enhance their educational and employment opportunities both domestically and internationally.

Our students are actively involved in fundraising efforts to contribute towards the cost of the trip. They are organizing events, seeking sponsorships, and working on various projects to raise money, demonstrating their commitment and determination to make this educational opportunity a reality.

Your support would enable us to pioneer a travel program specifically tailored for blind students, setting a precedent for future educational trips, and helping our students to achieve their full potential. We believe that with your help, this program can become a model for similar initiatives worldwide, making a lasting impact on the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals.
