My Travel Story

by: Tara Wolfenbarger Start Date: Nov 22, 2016 - End Date: Aug 21, 2017
For the past few years I’ve been studying agriculture education and community and leadership development at the University of Kentucky. During this time, I’ve been able to broaden my horizons through a variety of classes and gain experience through internships and organizations in my field. I am working hard to make sure that my education and activities prepare me for the job market in my area or even graduate school.

In preparation, I have decided to enroll in a class to study abroad in Ghana, West Africa for a few weeks during the summer, May 14th – May 28th, 2017. Not only will this program give me a real world experience in agriculture and community development, I will even be able to earn credit towards my agriculture education degree. Learning about agriculture, food and the environment in Ghana will allow me to explore my field in a new context, from a fresh perspective.

In Ghana I'll be learning about the rich cultural heritage, agriculture practices, fabric and families in urban and rural communities. I will see cocoa growing and learn about chocolate processing in a tour of the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana. I will also visit a rural village where the University of Kentucky sponsors a school feeding program for kindergartners and a school farm and sewing cooperative offering opportunities for women entrepreneurs in sewing and farming.

The total cost of this program, including my tuition cost (where I will be enrolled in an academic course), airline ticket, meals and other expenses, comes to about $6,000. While I am able to use some of my normal financial aid, apply for scholarships, and a tap into my savings, I will still come up short. This seems expensive, but traveling while in college is actually cheaper.

Because only 14.8% of U.S. college students study abroad, I know this experience will serve me well into the future by setting me apart from my peers.

Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for supporting my current and future goals!
