Kenya Volunteering Trip 2022
My Travel Story
Hi everyone,
In April 2022 I am embarking on a volunteering adventure to Kenya with a small group from the Sunderland AFC Foundation of Light. The trip is for 8 days and I will be leaving my family behind in the UK and taking annual leave from work.
I'd really appreciate any donations to help me do my little bit to support children in Kenya to learn, grow and fulfil their dreams.
I'll be setting up some sponsorship opportunities for businesses to feature their logos on my t-shirts. Please get in touch for more details.
Thanks for your donations.
Why am I doing this?
I've always found it extremely rewarding to coach, teach and transfer skills to others, whether that be as a dad, in my workplace or through my volunteer football coaching. I am really looking forward to removing myself from my home comforts and giving something back to a community in a different culture and in a wonderful part of the world.
About my trip
The trip will take me to Nakuru, Kenya. With a population of around 350,000 people, Nakuru is the country’s fourth-largest town. It serves as Kenya’s main connection between Nairobi and Kisumu, and Kenya and Uganda. Despite significant economic development over the last 10 years, not everybody has reaped the benefits, and levels of extreme poverty remain high. Food insecurity, limited access to education and inadequate housing remains a real problem for many.
When I arrive in Nakuru I'll be volunteering in a school to support with teaching and multi-sports coaching. Classrooms are often overcrowded and under-resourced, so I'll be assisting teachers to set and mark homework, deliver lessons and help support small groups of students with their work. Core subjects include English, maths, science, geography, religious studies and sport.
The YouTube video above shows the highlights from when volunteers from Derby County FC did the exact same trip.

Flights Booked! And We Have Been Assigned To..Ungana Academy
Ungana Academy is a nursery and primary school located in the Kaptembwa area of Nakuru. The school was set up in 1994 by Katherine Abungana to provide nutritious meals to local children who were extremely malnourished. As time progressed, Katherine was able to transform the project into a school to provide a free education for these children, as well as a daily meal. The school delivers Kenya’s national primary curriculum to students before they sit their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam.
Today, Ungana educates 220 students between the ages of three and 14. Whilst student numbers have remained steady since 2013, the school now has double the classroom space, meaning that class sizes have halved. However, Ungana’s facilities, such as the school’s kitchen and toilets, are in need of renovation work in order to cope with the number of students.
