My Travel Story

Hi guys, my name is Daniel Echeverria, and I'm currently a junior at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. I am majoring in Economics, Public Policy & Law, and Japanese Studies. I am also a captain on the wrestling team and part of a couple of other organizations on campus.

Going into college, I had no idea I would pick up an interest in Japanese culture and language. The opportunity came upon me after a friend recommended taking a Japanese language class, and I reluctantly decided to join. As of December 2025, I’ve been studying Japanese for a year and four months, and I’m eager to go abroad to have real cultural exchanges, use what I’ve been learning in the classroom, travel, and have a blast for the four months I’m there.

I'll be studying at Rikkyo University (立教大学). While abroad, I’ll be taking law, economics, and Japanese culture classes. After college, I plan on using Japanese in a career in business or law, so this semester will help me figure out whether building a life in Japan is something I truly want and can see myself doing long term.

Over the past month, I’ve been building a Japan bucket list with everything I want to do and everywhere I want to go. From now until March, I’m trying to stay off Japan travel content on social media and instead think of my own experiences that feel meaningful and interesting to me.

I leave the U.S. in March and return in August. Until then, I’ll be on campus finishing my wrestling season and practicing Japanese. As soon as my season ends, I’ll be on a plane to Japan, finally able to eat whatever I want and dive into Japanese food (I am most excited about the food).

I’ve created an Instagram account, @dannyinjapan, where I’ll be documenting this journey in Japanese and sharing updates so you can come along with me.
