My Travel Story

by: Molly Biscoe Start Date: Jul 1, 2018 - End Date: Oct 31, 2018
In October 2018 I will be going to Sri Lanka for 2 months to volunteer with mental health organisation SLV. During the trip I will be assisting in a clinical or community setting, helping individuals at varying stages of their recovery by putting on art therapy and other creative workshops, teaching English for development, children's development and special education activity support, and many more projects.
Mental health is something very close to my heart - over the past few years I have struggled with anxiety and depression, and feel very blessed to have had such a great support system around me and to have been able to get the help I needed relatively easily. I have also witnessed many close friends suffer with their own mental health issues, and it is always inspiring to see others finding the strength to acknowledge and tackle these issues.
From mine and others experiences, I have become increasingly interested in mental health and how I can help others who are struggling. A few months ago I decided to quit my job as a Designer in Amsterdam and explore this interest, and am hoping to pursue a Masters in Psychology when I return from my travels.
I decided to do this placement with SLV in Sri Lanka firstly as a way to gain valuable knowledge and experience working in psychology, but also as I am aware other parts of the world are far less equipped in their knowledge and treatment of mental health issues, so this is a chance to gain insight into that whilst contributing my efforts.
I would really appreciate any donations you are willing to spare to help fund my trip to Sri Lanka :)
