My Travel Story

Hi everyone! Welcome to my fundraising campaign for a Mental Health/Psychology Internship and Volunteer Program in Ghana, Africa. I am currently a psychology/neuroscience major at the University of Colorado Boulder, and I am interested in working with patients in hospitals who have lost normal, everyday functioning of their brain due to brain damage, brain surgery, or any kind of neurological deficit. I am graduating from my undergraduate program with a Bachelor's of Science and a Public Health Certificate in three years, ending August 2019. I plan on going to grad school to get my PhD in Neuropsychology, but I want to gain experience in the mental health field before I apply, which is where this internship comes in. This internship will allow me to shadow the professionals in charge at the psychiatric hospital I'll be working in. I will be working with a wide scope of duties from taking down patients medical histories to provide counseling and administering different kinds of tests. This program will allow me to work one-on-one with the patients of the institutions and gain experience in the field and doing the work I got my degree for. Help in the mental health field in Ghana is extremely important because mental health issues tend to come last on the list of priorities for the government. So not only will I be learning and obtaining vital knowledge, I will be helping the patients receive the best care they possibly can considering their circumstances. Along with gaining mental health experience I will also be fully submersed in the vastly diverse culture of West Africa. I am pretty well traveled and I have been out of the country many times, so preparing to go to Ghana next October 2019 is very exciting for me! I am extremely eager to learn as much as I can about mental health, West African culture and its people.
