My Travel Story

How does Portugal differ from the US in terms of drug use and policy? Why have they decriminalized all drugs in their country? These questions will be answered as part of my study abraod program in the wondeful country of Portugal! Being part of the social work program, we have been learning much about substance abuse and mental health, including the problems the US has with giving those affected by it the proper help they need. I am most interested in pursuing a career in the substance abuse or mental health field, which is why I am attending this study abroad opportunity in Portugal. I have seen firsthand the effects of substance abuse on people I have grown up with, which is why I am so passionate about working in this field and advocating for those who need our help the most. This opportunity will teach me so much that directly correlates with my future career and aspirations after completing school. I hope to work at a substance abuse or mental health facility in New England because I know there is a severe problem with many individuals needing help, whether with substances or mental health issues. I am also looking forward to experiencing the different cultures of Portugal, which will also help me in the future when working with people from all ethnicities and backgrounds. The people we will be meeting with and the events we are attending sound incredibly informative, and I know that being a part of this trip will inspire me even more to support those struggling.
