Hey the Brown Family get home
My Travel Story
Eight years ago, I left South Africa with a heart full of hope and a suitcase that held everything I could carry. I had dreams for myself, for my wife Nomsa, and for our daughter Liyana, who was barely two at the time. We landed in America with nothing certain, but everything possible.
For a while, we made it work. I found a job fixing HVAC systems, and Nomsa stayed home with Liyana while also taking evening classes to build her own future. We didn’t have much, but we were building something. We were proud. We worked hard. We believed in the path we were on.
Then things began to unravel. My company shut down suddenly, and with it went my steady income. I tried everything: odd jobs, deliveries, helping people move, working weekends and nights. But the bills didn’t slow down. Nomsa fell ill last year, and the hospital visits drained whatever savings we had left. I couldn’t afford insurance. Every month since has been a fight, just to eat, just to keep the lights on, just to smile in front of Liyana like everything’s fine.
It’s not fine anymore. We’ve come to a hard decision: it’s time to go home. Back to South Africa, to our family and our roots, to start again with what we’ve learned, and hopefully with a little more familiarity.
We’ve sold nearly everything we own just to stay afloat. But we don’t have enough for the flights home. That’s the last wall standing between us and a fresh start. I never imagined I’d be in a position to ask for help like this, but here I am, humbled and hopeful.
If you’re reading this and you’re able to help in any way, no matter how small, please know that it would mean the world to us. To me. To Nomsa. To Liyana, who still believes in kindness and second chances.
Thank you for taking the time to hear my story. May your kindness return to you tenfold.
