My Travel Story

by: Jack Harwood Start Date: Nov 24, 2016 - End Date: Mar 23, 2017

Vietnam is a developing third world country; this means that many people do not have many everyday life materials that us in New Zealand have, like running water. The 21 day Antipodeans guided, student lead expedition means that me and 19 other students from Onslow College, Johnsonville can go make a difference to another group of people, that if not for the trip I doubt we'd ever see.

When I think about it, the trip as a whole, it's kinda big. Like I'm being offered a life changing, once in a life time experience that I'll remember for the rest of my life. It's something that I'll tell my kids, and the 21 day trip will impact me as a person majorly.

This trip will impact not just me as a person, but my education and my future job opportunities. It's going to impact me as a person not just during the 21 day trip, but in the 18 month build up. I'm going to have so many new experiences, for example I never thought that I would have to raise $7,800 for a trip. It's going to impact my education because I am going to learn so many new skills in this once in a lifetime opportunity; I will gain leadership qualities, confidence, and it's just an amazing experience for me to be having. This trip will also have an impact on my future job opportunities because of all the new skills that I will be gaining as part of this experience, they will all be going onto my CV and hopefully helping me get a job. And even now, I'm going to have to gain work experience so then I can get a job to help fund-raise.

I am very passionate about this trip, and it is meaningful for me because I believe that if I can go help someone else's life, I should. I'm a 15 year old in New Zealand, and I can change my clothes when it rains, shower when it's cold and my quality of life in general is great. These kids my age, and younger aren't experiencing this; and I know I'm not going to carry a shower and some clothes into a village and expect their quality of life to improve, I'm probably not even going to bring a shower because that'd be silly. But if I can help anyone at all, I believe I should.
