My Travel Story

by: Alexandrea Thomas Start Date: Mar 9, 2023 - End Date: Jul 8, 2023
Nepal is an astounding country with a rich cultural history, environmental diversity, breathtaking landscapes, and a spiritual vibe. In 2005 the civil war came to an end and Nepal seemed to develop towards a better future… Until the earthquake in 2015 that threw the country into another spiral of poverty and disaster. In addition, Nepal has a long history of caste discrimination and social marginalization. This causes immense disparities within society.
I am passionate about helping others in any capacity I can. Since moving back to Ohio, I am a full-time student finishing my bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry - in hopes to attend Physician Assistant school next spring. Following my honorable discharge from the United States Coast Guard, I have been eager to do more and make an impact in a less fortunate community. Luckily, this summer I have time to focus on what is important to me and this opportunity presented itself at the perfect time. Volunteering in Nepal would not only allow me to help others, but also learn how I can become the best healthcare provider possible. More importantly, this opportunity will help me to see the world from a different perspective, which enables me to develop critical thinking and cross-cultural skills.
The organization I selected is very important to me. Volunteer Society Nepal is a locally run, nonprofit, Nepali organization. With volunteering, there is cost, but that’s what makes this organization so great. They use all the money to provide education, shelter, food, and vocational tools to the Nepali women and children. Therefore, not only will your donation help fund my volunteer trip, but it will also be used to support equal opportunities for life in Nepal.
During my time in Nepal, I will be interning at the local hospital and volunteering at health clinics that provide interactive workshop to the classes and schools about health. For example, about healthy lifestyle and food, brushing of teeth, and hygiene.
