I chose to study abroad in Iceland because I am an Architecture student minoring in Sustainable Design. During my trip to Iceland, I will be going to Reykjavik University to study geothermal and hydroelectric energy to develop a capstone project about how to reform the world using sustainable design. While traveling, I plan on going on many adventures including glacier hiking, hot springs, camping to find the Northern Lights, and visiting volcanoes and geysers. I feel that my Iceland experience will help me understand how Iceland is tied to its native climate and uses it to its utmost potential. Unfortunately, where I natively live in the United States, I feel we are not doing enough to embrace our environment to sufficiently create a symbiotic relationship with it. As humans, we tend to neglect nature and that is something I hope to change. My ultimate goal is to change the way we think about the environment and by sharing my knowledge and integrating it into my design, I hope to gain recognition as an architect who challenged standard practice to create an environment we will continue to prosper in.
